Warm Greetings, It's amazing to me how time flies even faster with every decade of life... and how much technology advances, and how many miscreants take advantage of that (*you* and *me*) and our innocence... and our unsuspecting natures. This issue is dedicated to self-protection, online & off, a little different slant but still within our self-empowerment focus. I would like to welcome new readers, too, as you are appreciated so very much, just as our more 'tenured' readers always are. :-) With the advent of even more viruses, worms, & many other awful invasions of our internet serenity, Microsoft has kindly created a site that will be invaluable to the not-yet-informed, and perhaps helpful to those who are, but are dragging their feet for whatever reasons about getting things repaired and protected. http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/ Those with Macs can go here for Apple's Mac User security site: http://www.info.apple.com/usen/security/index.html Specifics about PC firewalls and their importance are here: http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/firewall.asp and from the first link above, there are details on antivirus software (both fr*ee and purchasable) and the importance of keeping your PC's microsoft patches up to date. Personally, I use & recommend ZoneAlarm for my firewall and AVG by Grisoft for my anti-virus software. Both are FR*EE, too, unless you ever choose to upgrade. So far, I have seen no need to. They work great as they are and no nags, either, like some fr*ee software does. There is yet another VERY helpful site I have interacted with for years, and I think the guy who created it is pure genius, and that's Steve Gibson's truly useful and beneficial site: http://grc.com where you can actually TEST your computer for holes and leaks that could let in bad things & people. He gives away many FR*EE tools for your protection there. It is a sad state of affairs that we have to spend so much time and effort protecting ourselves because the world at large is littered by those who mean us harm, but it's a fact. One of the other most-talked-about subjects these days is Identity Theft, and I hope that you are well-informed in that one!! It scares me to pieces...... only because I know they wouldn't choose to also take over my debtload, as well, just the 'good parts'. ;-) If you read a few of the horror stories about it, it will probably scare you into being a bunch more careful... and it really only takes a few minutes more to shred potentially harmful to you documents (if they fell into evil hands) and the cost of a shredder is minimal compared to the agony of the ill-fated consequences. I got a good one at Office Max for under $30 on sale. ;-) And... I would highly recommend using cross-cut rather than straight strips that a dedicated criminal could re-paste & use the data! Stories like: men & women who just tossed those "innocent- looking" credit card applications in the garbage.. sometimes not even opened, and the perpetrators of evil who took those very papers, changed the address and phone numbers and applied for a credit card in YOUR good name, then didn't pay the bill, and you guessed it... who pays with a bad name on their credit?
